WELCOME TOÂ
KYOTO
A Kimono-clad geisha vanishing around a Gion corner...Riverside cherry trees bursting into cloudlike bloom...Zen gardens with raked sand and haiku-inspiring rock formations....Kyoto is old Japan writ large, synonymous with ancient temples, tea ceremony masters, traditional ryokan inns and centuries-old craftsmanship.

As the imperial capital for over 1,000 years, there is no surprise that Kyoto remains the spiritual heart of Japan: 2000 temples and shrines: a city of true masterpieces of religious architecture.
With its roots as the cultural capital of the country, many traditional arts and crafts are kept alive by artisans from generation to generation. The streets downtown, through historic Gion and past machiya (traditional Japanese townhouses)... explore the speciality shops from hundreds-years old wagashi (Japanese Traditional Sweets) shops, to exquisite artisan craft such as lacquerware, indigo-dyed noren (hanging curtains).
The old ways are still clinging on in Kyoto, the cultural and aesthetic capital of Japan.
MACHIYA:
A JAPANESE HERITAGE
Machiya are traditional townhouses in Kyoto, typically two-story, which previously served as both a residence, and place of commerce for merchants and craftsmen. They defined the architectural atmosphere of downtown Kyoto for centuries, and represent the standard defining form of machiya throughout the country.
Machiya communities are small neighborhoods made up of closely grouped homes organized on both sides of a narrow street, sometimes with small alleyways in between the homes, help to create a strong sense of community.

Staying in a Machiya allows you to experience Kyoto and the way of traditional living. Machiya combines all the advantages of a vacation rental with the authenticity of a ryokan, creating a truly unique traveling experience.
